Another month has come and gone and I can hardly believe it! We ended October with a fun and festive celebration. Not only were we celebrating character day, but we also had a fantastic Halloween party. Thank you parents for donating their time, food and talents which made this class party unforgettable. Check out the pictures tab for more!
What's been happening in the classroom?
In writing we are beginning our first personal narrative draft. We have chosen a believable moment to write about and students have created characters to place in these moments. Then students placed their characters onto a story map, writing out each scene with more detail. This week we will begin the final drafting of these stories. Stay tuned as I will be sending home copies of these stories soon.
In math we are digging into multiplication while focusing on factors, multiples, arrays and multiplicative comparison. Math talk at home around any or all of these concepts will greatly help solidify these concepts for students. Noticing math in everyday situations invaluable and multiplication lends itself towards wonderful discourse. Let me know what you talk about!
In reading we are still focusing on comprehension reading strategies with non-fiction text. These are all the skills we have learned so far! Ask your student what their favorite strategy is and ask them what article they have enjoyed most. My personal favorite comprehension strategy to use is asking questions and I love determining importance by marking up the text.

- Monitor Comprehension identifies ways readers keep track of their thinking and monitor their understanding as they read.
- Activate and Connect alerts students to the impact background knowledge has on their learning and supports them to connect the new to the known.
- Ask Questions highlights how readers can use questions to clarify unfamiliar ideas and discover new information.
- Infer Meaning teaches students how to use context clues and text evidence to crack open the new concepts and big ideas in a text.
- Determine Importance helps students identify, organize, and share the important ideas and information in a text.
- Summarize and Synthesize encourages students to go beyond the simple restating of facts, to pull together their thinking, and use all the strategies to understand big ideas.
Can you believe how much we've learned so far?
Until next time,
