Well December has come and gone and we are off and running in the new year!
December/January Happenings:
Math: We are ROCKIN' IT! I am so impressed by my third graders and their math abilities. Ask your son or daughter to show you a tape diagram or a number bond. These are ways your child can express their math thinking in regards to multiplication and division. I am so proud of their hard work and desire to do well and I I just love watching them explore numbers, discover new ways to solve problems and share their math thinking with one another.
Writing: We are finishing our second and final personal narratives this week! Students have shown great growth and progress in not only revising their writing based on what I have asked of them, but also independently revising their own writing. This is a difficult task to accomplish, yet they can read though their writing and identify areas to improve by using focus and showing. We will begin opinion writing midweek and I am excited to watch them navigate this new writing genre. Stay tuned!
Reading: We are continuing our unit on responding to fiction. We are reading My Name is Maria Isabel and while we are almost finished, our discovery in identifying character traits and development will continue into February. We are learning how to make a claim and then prove our claim with specific evidence from the text. This takes practice and we are rolling right along.
Science: We just wrapped up our unit on the planets. Students read about the planets, made rotation verses revolution models and completed a planet report. Students used the ipads and loads of library books to complete their research and had fun sharing new facts about their planets.
Lastly, I have a special request. We have arrived at the season of indoor recesses and I am looking for board games and puzzles that your family is willing to donate to the classroom. I have a few games, and the class is being very patient with the same old ones, but I have a feeling this will change by February. Any donations are greatly appreciated by both myself and the class.
Thank you for all you do! I sure do appreciate all your support!
